No matter what time of the year you visit Madrid, there will be something going on. However, when the sun’s shining and the weather’s warm, it just feels like a better time to party. So, with summer almost upon us, we’re going to give you a rundown of a few of the top events coming up in the Spanish city.
Just as a quick tip before we go any further, there are some excellent luxury hotels in Madrid that can make your break extra special, so it’s worth considering booking a room in one of these if you want to make every aspect of your trip memorable.
When: June 4th to July 27th 2014
Where: Various galleries and museums in Madrid
PhotoEspana is a wonderful event for art lovers to come to, as it showcases works by some of the world’s top photographers. This festival has been running since 1998 and, every year, Madrid’s galleries play host to stunning exhibitions of photography.
As well as the chance to view a variety of installations, there are also workshops held to help amateur photographers hone their skills. There are a series of awards handed out at PhotoEspana every year and as a visitor, you can help choose one of the winners – the People’s Choice Award, which allows you to vote for your favourite exhibition in the ‘Official’ section.
When: July 2nd to 6th 2014
Where: Chueca district
The streets of the Chueca district come alive during Madrid’s annual Gay Pride festival, with all manner of music, dancing, colourful costumes and performers converging on the area to join in the fun and festivities.
What’s great about Madrid’s Gay Pride festival is that it’s about much more than a parade and street parties (although these are an integral part of the event). It works alongside galleries, cinemas, bookshops and other local businesses to provide a varied and exciting cultural event, so there really is something for everyone here, day and night.
Of course, it is the vibrant parade (hosted on the Saturday) that takes centre stage and sees thousands of revellers take to the streets to join in the fun as the floats make their way around the Chueca neighbourhood.
Veranos de la Villa Summer Festival
When: July and August 2014 (dates TBC)
Where: Casa de Campo Park and Sabatini Gardens
Every summer, Madrid hosts a series of open-air concerts, theatrical productions, operas, dances and other events designed to allow residents and tourists alike to enjoy a varied cultural programme in the balmy summer evenings.
The schedule for 2014 has yet to be released, but it typically features hundreds of different performances and events that cover a wide range of disciplines, ensuring that there truly is something for everyone. To give you an idea of the diversity Veranos de la Villa boasts, in 2013 the programme included the Cinderella Ballet on ice, Zarzuela (a Spanish opereta) and a host of performances by the likes of the Blues Brothers, Carlos do Carmo, Elvis Costello and Diego Cigala.
If you’re planning a trip to Madrid in July or August this year, it’s well worth seeing what’s going on closer to the time and attending one or two of the evening events – they’re bound to be shows to remember, regardless of what you see.
