Wink Hostel in Singapore is pushing the envelope again – this time with a new twist to recycling in the hospitality industry!

Travellers frequently collect toiletries provided for free in hotels they stay in. According to a recent Travelocity survey, more than 80% of hotel guests bring home toiletries freebies from hotels they stay in.  These often end up sitting unused and forgotten in a storeroom or suitcase.  Wink finds this a terrible waste. It is telling its guests: Don’t waste your collected freebies, share them with fellow travellers.

Wink has put aside space and designed a cool stand for travellers to donate (recycle) their freebies toiletries. It will attempt to visually check donated toiletries and affix Wink stickers before handing the items out for free to its guests. To kick-start, Wink has already amassed a small collection of shampoos and soaps from friends, relatives and guests.

“The effort is part recycling and part pay-it-forward (good karma!). It also fits nicely with the travel-sharing that Wink sees and encourages amongst our guests – strangers mingling and swapping stories, going out together for local food delights and so on,” remarks CB Heng, owner at Wink.

The campaign is tentatively planned to last three months. Judging by preliminary reactions and early toiletries donations, Wink is hopeful this could be the start of a sustained trend.

Wink is Indulgence on a budget, and pioneered the boutique hostel concept in Singapore. Amongst the first worldwide to tout “pod” style beds, Wink affords travellers their private sleeping sanctums, while allowing for socializing in community spaces. Each custom-made pod is built with sound-resistant walls and features dedicated ambient lighting, anti-glare LED reading light and power sockets. It comes with a cushy backrest, soft duvet, and generous room for personal effects.

Facilities include a drinks café for schmoozing, kitchenette, multiple internet stations, laundry room, entertainment lounge (retrofitted with flat screen TV and surround-sound systems) and snug nooks spread about for guests to catch up. Smart Cards for access, fibre-optic broadband and wireless internet, environment-sensitive setups, air-conditioned rooms are just some of the technology-infused amenities amply available.

Wink is housed in a historic pre-war shophouse with a Chinese Baroque façade, exuding charm and local flavors.  It resides right in Chinatown – a must-see cultural enclave of Singapore’s largest ethnic group – and is a convenient pivot to access the country’s attractions. It does not get more convenient than having Chinatown’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station a mere 3-minutes stroll from Wink.

Of course, you can easily find other cheap hotels in Singapore close to the MRT, especially if you are looking for something with more privacy and comfort. When travelling, guest can take the toiletries that are put in their room and collect them as souvenirs; this allows visitors to remember the fun they had during their vacation. It also helps to remember the hotel in case they want to come back and visit the city again.
